EMV’s Educational Mandate:
“To sponsor musical performances and educational opportunities informed by an in-depth knowledge of original performing conditions, period-specific instruments, and broad historical context.”
Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme (BOMP)
Developing the next generation of period performers, students rehearse weekly over each academic term at UBC with a core group of five professional mentors led by the PBO’s Music Director Alexander Weimann. A select group of students are recruited to participate in the programme, and instruments have been made available for loan to all participants through the UBC School of Music and EMV’s Instrument Collections. This programme is generously supported by Vic and Joan Baker.
EMV Scholarship Programme for BC Residents
In the Fall of 2017, EMV began a new scholarship programme awarding up to 10 annual scholarships to BC residents. Qualified candidates are professional-track music students or active professional musicians seeking to develop skills in early music performance. This initiative, like EMV’s Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme is aimed at increasing the long-term sustainability of the regional period instrument scene in BC by providing instruction on early music performance through private lessons with primarily regionally based professional artists.
Green College Performances
For over five years, EMV has offered an annual series of free lecture-demonstrations at Green College at UBC, related to our season programming and designed to inform and grow our audience base.
Douglas College Performance/Lectures
Since 2016, EMV has partnered with Douglas College to present a series of three free Lecture-Demonstrations related to programs from EMV’s Main Series. These serve to enrich the students’ musical education and bring an awareness of early music and EMV’s season programming to the broader community in New Westminster.
EMV Instrument Collection
Over the years, EMV has assembled a valuable collection of unique historical instruments. This collection is available to the community and benefits many musicians and established cultural institutions that produce concerts and educational programmes of repertoire requiring specialized instruments.
Other Education & Outreach Activities
In addition to our formal education & outreach programmes, EMV also hosts open dress rehearsals, pre-concert discussions before all concerts, documentary screenings, and public talks relating to our repertoire. These presentations are all free and open to the public.
