EMV: The Next Generation – A Dedication to Music

Works by: J.S. Bach, Abel, Schubert, Schumann

Artists: Hans Grunwald, baritone; Adrienne Hyde, viola da gamba; Christina Hutten, keyboard

A musical reverie of poignant lyricism and melancholy, incorporating the richness of Adrienne Hyde’s gamba playing, the intensity of Bach’s arias, the flexibility of Hans Grunwald’s baritone, the tenderness of Schubert’s lieder, the introspection of Abel’s music for solo gamba. Such dedication to music offers human connection across generations and centuries.

Generously sponsored by The Graham and Gayle Cooke Foundation

Hans Grunwald, baritone

Hans Grunwald, baritone, is currently completing his studies in voice and mathematics at the University of British Columbia, where he is fortunate to have studied with J. Patrick Raftery, and coaches Rena Sharon and Andrea Grant. Hans performed lead and name roles in 3 UBC operas, before shifting his focus to vocal song and concert repertoire.

Originally from Santa Cruz, California, Hans was a finalist in the Schmidt Vocal Arts Undergraduate competition in the United States in 2022. Later that year, he received a grant and fellowship to attend Songfest in San Francisco, where he appeared in public concerts and master classes with Martin Katz and Graham Johnson, and studied with Cesar Ulloa. In the summer of 2023, Hans was invited as a Fellow to the Music Academy of the West in California by Sasha Cooke and John Churchwell. During his eight week residency at the Academy, Hans performed the role of Schaunard (La Bohème) in concert and performed in numerous ensembles - including the solo baritone role in Jake Heggie’s Here and Gone. In November 2023 Hans was invited by the Bach on the Rock festival of Salt Spring Island to perform the baritone solo in Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, in which he was honored to perform with Suzie LeBlanc. Hans is excited to perform in Early Music Vancouver's summer festival this year, as a "Next Generation Artist."

Adrienne Hyde, viola da gamba

Adrienne Hyde is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in historical performance practice on the baroque cello, bass viol, lirone, and bass violin. She graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 2020 and in 2023 she completed her Master’s degrees in Baroque Cello and Viola da Gamba at the Juilliard School on full scholarship. At Juilliard she was a Morse Teaching Artist, a Music Advancement Program Fellow, and a Gluck Community Service Fellow, through which she taught in NYC public schools and mentored young cellists, while providing musical service to her community. Currently she is a Manager of Community Engagement and Education for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
In 2023-2024 she will perform at the Boston Early Music Festival and tour with the Belgian group Vox Luminis. She will also join Trinity Wall Street Baroque Orchestra, Repast Baroque, the Sebastians, the Thirteen, Philharmonie Austin, Bach Collegium San Diego, the Helicon Foundation, and Aston Magna players for concerts all over the United States.
Adrienne is deeply committed to equity. She is a passionate artistic administrator for the Valissima Institute, a conducting training program for young women committed to gender equity in classical music. Three years ago she co- founded Open Source Baroque, a consort dedicated to playing the music of women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ composers. She is also a regular volunteer at psychiatric hospitals in Baltimore, where she resides with her partner, a Baroque and Natural horn freelancer and French Horn player in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Christina Hutten, keyboard

Organist and harpsichordist Christina Hutten has presented recitals in Canada, the United States, and Europe. She performs regularly with Pacific Baroque Orchestra and has appeared as concerto soloist with the Okanagan Symphony, the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, and the Arizona State University Chamber Orchestra. Christina is also an enthusiastic teacher. She coaches and coordinates the early music ensembles at the University of British Columbia and has given masterclasses and workshops at institutions including the Victoria Baroque Summer Program, Brandon University, the University of Manitoba, Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada’s National Music Centre in Calgary, and the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute.

Funded by a generous grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, she pursued historical keyboard studies in Europe with Francesco Cera, François Espinasse, and Bernard Winsemius. She participated in the Britten-Pears Programme, led by Andreas Scholl and Tamar Halperin, for which she was awarded the Loewen Prize. Christina obtained a master’s degree in Organ Performance from Arizona State University under the direction of Kimberly Marshall and an Advanced Certificate in Harpsichord Performance from the University of Toronto, where she studied with Charlotte Nediger. She is now a doctoral candidate in musicology at UBC.
