Hans Grunwald, baritone, is currently completing his studies in voice and mathematics at the University of British Columbia, where he is fortunate to have studied with J. Patrick Raftery, and coaches Rena Sharon and Andrea Grant. Hans performed lead and name roles in 3 UBC operas, before shifting his focus to vocal song and concert repertoire.
Originally from Santa Cruz, California, Hans was a finalist in the Schmidt Vocal Arts Undergraduate competition in the United States in 2022. Later that year, he received a grant and fellowship to attend Songfest in San Francisco, where he appeared in public concerts and master classes with Martin Katz and Graham Johnson, and studied with Cesar Ulloa. In the summer of 2023, Hans was invited as a Fellow to the Music Academy of the West in California by Sasha Cooke and John Churchwell. During his eight week residency at the Academy, Hans performed the role of Schaunard (La Bohème) in concert and performed in numerous ensembles – including the solo baritone role in Jake Heggie’s Here and Gone. In November 2023 Hans was invited by the Bach on the Rock festival of Salt Spring Island to perform the baritone solo in Ralph Vaughn Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, in which he was honored to perform with Suzie LeBlanc. Hans is excited to perform in Early Music Vancouver’s summer festival this year, as a “Next Generation Artist.”
