Formed in 2005, the Chiaroscuro Quartet comprises Russian violinist Alina Ibragimova Spanish violinist Pablo Hernán Benedí, Swedish violist Emilie Hörnlund, and French cellist Claire Thirion. Dubbed “a trailblazer for the authentic performance of High Classical chamber music” by Gramophone, this international ensemble performs music of the Classical and early Romantic periods on gut strings with historical bows. The quartet’s unique sound (described in The Observer as “a shock to the ears of the best kind”) is highly acclaimed by audiences and critics all over Europe.

Bach: The Circle of Creation — a celebration of the genius of Bach and the latest multi-media creation by Alison Mackay, the creator of phenomenally successful Tafelmusik productions seen around the world including The Galileo Project and House of Dreams. J.S. Bach: The Circle of Creation combines text, music, and stunning projected video and images to explore the world of the artisans — papermakers, violin carvers, string spinners, and performers — who helped J.S. Bach realize his musical genius. This all-Bach programme is performed by Tafelmusik musicians entirely from memory.

One of the greatest composers of the early classical period was Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier Saint-Georges. Known as “Le Mozart Noir”, he was one of the earliest musicians of the European classical tradition to have African ancestry. Incredibly, this son of a slave overcame adversities of class, race, and prejudice to become a major musical star all over Europe inspired both Mozart and Haydn. Today, he is almost entirely forgotten.
