Historical Dance Workshop for Beginners

A Saturday Afternoon Dance Workshop for Beginners

This Workshop offers an introduction to historical dance technique and repertoire. Its main purpose is to offer participants experience in several different dance forms.

Workshop Outline

The workshop focuses on Renaissance and Baroque dance forms:

Renaissance Dance: The basic steps for the Pavane, Gaillard, Branle

Baroque Dance: The basic steps for the Bourrée, Gavotte, Rigaudon, Sarabande, Menuet, Chaconne, Passacaille, Gigue etc.


Level

This Workshop is open to anyone wishing to try to dance; it could even be the first time that you attend a dance class.

Participants should bring rehearsal clothing (which should be comfortable to dance in), and very flexible shoes (with or without heel, but flexible) or socks.

Recorded music will be used; musicians interested in playing during the workshop are asked to contact our office in advance.

Early enrolment is recommended, as registration will be limited.


Registration & Tuition Fees

The Tuition Fee for this Introductory Dance Workshop is Cdn$85 (check today’s exchange rate here).

A reduced combined fee of Cdn$140 (check today’s exchange rate here) applies to those who also participate in the morning Harpsichord Maintenance and Regulation Workshop with Ton Amir.

Admission is free for participants in the Baroque Programmes. As enrolment will be limited, we recommend that participants register in advance, by contacting our office.


Julie Andrijeski

Julie AndrijeskiJulie Andrijeski enjoys both teaching and performing early music and dance. As a full-time Lecturer at Case Western Reserve University, Ms. Andrijeski teaches classes in historical performance practices, teaches lessons in baroque violin, and directs the baroque orchestra, chamber, and dance ensembles. Her combined skills in music and dance often culminate in workshops and special teaching engagements at colleges and universities such as the Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, Juilliard, the University of Southern California, and the University of Colorado – Boulder. During the summers, Ms. Andrijeski teaches both violin and dance at several summer courses and festivals including those in Oberlin (BPI), Madison (MEMF), and Vancouver, BC (BIP).

In addition to her teaching positions, Ms. Andrijeski maintains an active performance schedule. She has been invited to play with many diverse early music groups across the nation and regularly appears with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra (Artistic Director), New York State Baroque (Concertmaster), Quicksilver (Co-Director with Robert Mealy), Apollo’s Fire, Les Délices, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, and The King’s Noyse.
