Course Information & Repertoire Suggestions
for “The Legacy of the Baroque”

The Baroque Instrumental Programme focuses on Baroque Dance Class & Masterclasses in the morning sessions, while the afternoons are devoted to two daily separate small ensemble sessions, and a baroque orchestra/continuo class, alternating with other presentations.

Click here for details on the daily schedule.

There are no scheduled classes on Saturday or Sunday; however, course participants can take part in the scheduled Saturday Workshops:

Morning Baroque Dance Workshop

Each morning will begin with a Baroque dance session for all instrumentalists. Baroque dance specialist Julie Andrijeski will offer a practical introduction to French baroque dance forms.

“…Dance class beyond criticism! Helpful, enjoyable, fun, because it was non-threatening even to newcomers like me.
I learned more than I could have imagined about playing baroque music.”

Morning Master Classes

REPERTOIRE FOR THE MASTERCLASSES

In general, participants may bring any Baroque or early Classical repertoire they wish to these Masterclasses – keeping in mind the focus is primarily on music of the transition from the late Baroque to the early Classical era. Some faculty members have submitted more specific repertoire lists as guidelines (see below). If you have difficulties finding repertoire, you can contact our office and ask for the e-mail address of your faculty member to discuss this further: workshops@earlymusic.bc.ca

VIOLIN

Participants should bring well-prepared material for 3 or 4 master class sessions.
Solo works, sonatas and concertos of the High Baroque and Classical periods.
Please write for specific suggestions if necessary: workshops@earlymusic.bc.ca

FLUTE

Participants should bring well-prepared material for 3 or 4 master class sessions.
Specific repertoire suggestions for the masterclasses will be posted later.

CELLO or VIOLA DA GAMBA

Participants should bring well-prepared material for 3 or 4 master class sessions.
Specific repertoire suggestions for the masterclasses will be posted later.

KEYBOARD

Participants should bring well-prepared material for 3 or 4 master class sessions.
Specific repertoire suggestions for the masterclasses will be posted later.

Reading Sessions / Continuo Class

A series of reading sessions of orchestra and chamber music repertoire, under the guidance of faculty members, and featuring music from the late Baroque, the Rococo and the early Classical era. Simultaneously, there will be a Continuo Class, offered by Jacques Ogg and other faculty members. These sessions will alternate with other special presentations.

Afternoon Ensemble Sessions

The faculty will form ensembles and assign repertoire at the beginning of each of the two weeks. Two separate, different ensemble sessions are scheduled for the afternoons; this provides an opportunity for participants to work with different instrumentalists, and on different repertoires.

If you have specific repertoire interests, or would like to play in an ensemble with specific participants, please us know in advance by email – and we will forward your suggestions to the faculty; an effort will be made to accommodate such wishes.

“Early Music in Context”

Following last year’s successful launch, we will again offer a special series of early-evening lecture/presentations under the title “Early Music in Context", scheduled from 5:30-6:30 pm (which does not conflict with the Green College Meal Plan). Faculty members, musicians and guest scholars will offer presentations on a variety of subjects.
